HE IS RISEN! - Sunday, April 8th, 2007

“Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. They were saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?’ Looking up, they saw that the stone had had been rolled away, although it was extremely large. Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, ‘Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place they laid Him.’”
Mark 16:2-6

I can’t imagine the feelings that Mary Magdalene and Mary must have had as they approached the tomb where Jesus’ body was placed. Here they had bought spices “so that they might come and anoint Him.” What did they find? Not what they were expecting. The large stone that was used to conceal Jesus’ body was rolled to the side! Probably as their initial thoughts were, I too would have been inwardly shocked. Who could have moved the stone? Even more shocking, there was a person in the tomb, but it wasn’t Jesus. Rather “they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe.” Mary Magdalene and Mary “were amazed.”

Who wouldn’t be amazed? They saw an angel sitting in the empty tomb where Jesus was suppose to be. Knowing me, I would have probably passed out with excitement. The things that Jesus spoke of came true! However, to clarify, the angel didn’t want them to be amazed by him. Rather, the amazement should be placed on the fact that Jesus from Nazarene wasn’t in the tomb. “He has risen!” In and throughout Jesus’ ministry to His disciples, He forewarned them of His death, burial, and resurrection. Yet, just like the disciples and those close to Jesus, until we see the absolute truth lived out in front of our eyes, our human minds can hear all we want, but our faith doesn’t come alive until we see something extraordinary. It is sad, but true. So let me ask you, “Do you believe that Jesus Christ was crucified? Do you believe that He was buried? And do you believe that He is risen? If so, are you AMAZED?

May I encourage you this Easter day to be in AWE of our Lord and Savior. May we be in amazement of all that He has done for us. For when we cease focusing on Jesus Christ and what He has done for us, we become lukewarm. We become complacent. We become stagnant. And we might even put our amazement on the wrong things. But when our focus is on the death, burial, and resurrection, we will be continually amazed! Because of Jesus, we have been given eternal life. I know as Christians we know this, but if we believe it, then why do we loose our amazement? My prayer for today is that we are always in AWE of the Messiah.

And that is what I hope comes from this 40-day tent revival. First for the church, that we turn back to Him. Let’s refocus where we place our wonder! And then to the lost, who don’t even know the truth about Jesus Christ. My prayer is that they see Jesus Christ lived out in our lives…then they too will be amazed!
