An Excellent Wife -Saturday, May 12th, 2007
“An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life...”
Proverbs 31:10-12
Many times, regardless of the environment, there are always individuals who quietly serve behind the scenes and are never recognized. They don’t want it. They don’t need it. But they deserve it. And one individual that comes to mind is my wife Laura. You see, for the past 34 days, most in attendance, always see me up on stage. But they don’t always see my wife. Why? Because she is always making sure things are going smoothly OUTSIDE THE TENT.
Whether it is coordinating the volunteers for the evening, or at home with our two little girls, Maya and Nadia, my wife maximizes each situation she has been given. I couldn’t do this pursuit of revival without her. Her support and encouragement are essential to my see my desire for God’s people to return to Him. I couldn’t do this journey of faith without her love and support.
Laura is my best friend. She is my wife of over 5 years. She is authentic. She is energetic. She is outgoing. She is sincere. She is beautiful. She is a woman of God with a heart for His people. I am so blessed to have an “excellent wife.” As Solomon wrote, “Her worth is far above jewels.” Words won’t describe my affection and love for her. I do trust her. I do have confidence in her. Why? Because she continues to pour her life into my life, as well as my little girls. What a blessing it is to have a partner who is willing to walk beside me and help build a 21st Century Noah’s Ark. As husband and wife, we believe that we are getting ready for God to release His waters upon His people here in Dallas. When well we see the outpouring of the Holy Spirit? Who knows. How it will happen…yet to be determined? But it doesn’t matter to my wife. She is willing to hold my hand and walk with me in this unknown and unseen process.
Small things that most wouldn’t know, but I appreciate so much, is that every evening at 5:00 p.m. my wife has dinner ready. She understands that I need physical strength to keep going each and every day in this 40-day journey. So without complaining, she has a meal ready for the family. Solomon said these are worthy qualities within a wife. He wrote, “She like merchant ships; she brings her food from afar. She rises also while it is still night and gives food to her household and portions to her maidens.” And also, every meal, Laura gets all the medication ready for little Maya. And if she isn’t feeding Maya, she is spoon feeding Nadia. Her consistency in serving our family at every meal time is a wonderful encouragement to me. Praise the Lord for an excellent wife.
Aside from feeding our family, my wife looks to meet our needs in other ways. In our tight-fit apartment, we don’t have a dishwasher, therefore my wife is constantly doing dishes. She is constantly cleaning our apartment. With my hours unusual and my energy a bit on the lower side, Laura has picked up my slack. She has helped us with the recording the finances. She does all the laundry. She does errands to keep our household afloat. And all of these things are done with a selfless attitude. She gives herself up for the sake of the family. Praise the Lord for an excellent wife.
Some of you might be saying, “Why are you writing a love letter about your wife in this devotional?” Because so many times, as men in leadership positions in the ministry, we get so caught up in the ministry outside the home, that we forget to take time to invest and pour into our own families. We overlook the obvious. And I will admit, over these past 34 days, it has been hard to keep the balance of time INSIDE THE TENT and time in the apartment, but I believe because of my wife’s strengths and qualities, I have been able to keep this perspective. And I just wanted to let my wife know how much I appreciate her behind the scenes efforts. I give praise to God for her.
I could continue to write more and more about my best friend and pal for life. But I am going to let the words of Solomon so eloquently describe the woman of God has so richly blessed me in my life. Proverbs 31: 25-21 says, “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying: ‘Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.’ Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the product of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”
Men, please consider taking time this weekend, and let the women of your life (wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, etc…) know how much you appreciate all that they have done for you. Be intentional, and express how much they mean to you.
